Ovulation

Question:
Why the breast discharge and abnormal periods? How long do I need to take Clomid for results or trying other alternatives?

N. Ruiz
Illinois

Answer:
Breast discharge may indicate an elevation of the hormone prolactin. This hormone can interfere with normal ovulation by suppressing activity of the hypothalamus and pituitary gland. High levels of prolactin, may interfere with normal release of FSH and LH which stimulate egg development and release. Women with thyroid disease may also have high prolactin levels. Blood tests to check both prolactin and the thyroid stimulating hormone, TSH should be considered.

If you do not conceive after 3-4 cycles of clomiphene, further evaluation is indicated and a visit with a fellowship trained reproductive endocrinologist will often provide the best results. For more information on clomiphene, please read http://www.ivf.com/clom.html.
