Endometriosis
Question:
Can you succesfully detect endometriosis with ultra sound?
Dora M.
Illinois
Answer:
While transvaginal ultrasound may suggest the presence of an ovarian endometrioma
(endometriosis cyst in the ovary), it will not detect the majority of cases where
endometriosis involves the peritoneum or the rectovaginal septum, between the
vagina and rectum. When I perform a transvaginal ultrasound I take particular
note of where you note pain. This enables me to determine potential areas that
may be involved. I will note whether the ovaries demonstrate normal mobility or
are they fixed in place with adhesions. Does palpation of the ovary reproduce
your pain? Is there pain in the area of the uterosacral ligaments? If the answer
to any of these questions is yes, then a laparoscopy may be indicated to evaluate
and excise all evident disease.
